During natural disasters and mass casualty events, the process of locating missing people is an important task. The use of Search and Rescue Dogs have become an invaluable component of locating these missing people. Many times, the amount of time is limited and lost minutes could mean lost lives. In order to be effective, the Search and Rescue process require dedicated Search and Rescue handlers and extremely well trained dogs.
Most of the time the handler walks along-side dogs by foot, but sometimes the handlers can work the dogs riding along-side on a horse. These dogs are trained to detect the human scent. There are multiple types of Search and Rescue dogs. They are classified as either air-scenting dogs or trailing/tracking dogs. The discipline goes as far as classifying dogs as to whether they arescent discriminate or not. Scent discriminate means dogs have proven their ability to only alert handlers only when an individual is detected based on the scent provided. Non-scent discriminating dogs are trained to alert handlers for any scent type. Examples may be human scent or any other cadaver scent. Trailing dogs rely on scent of the tracking subject and AirscentingSAR dogs hone in on tracking target by relying on the airborne human scent.
When it comes to training search and rescue dogs, as the handler you can expect to endure a comprehensive training program for both you and the SAR dog. It is always best to train SAR dogs as early as the first 10-weeks and ready to deploy within 18 months. Many SAR dogs are retired within not more than 10 years. While SAR training is considering an advanced training skill, it absolutely requires Obedience Training and intense socialization to assure they can handle being around all the other dogs and first responders at staging areas.
The training is intense and rigorous. If you are interested in Search and Rescue training, contact the SAR Training experts at Dog Training of Houston for more details about the process of training your dog as a Search and Rescue Dog.
